The Cardiovascular Intervention Care Unit (CVICU) delivers medical attention for various conditions and diagnoses, including acute myocardial infarctions, cardiogenic shock, severe coronary artery disease and other critical concerns. As an RN, you will assist fellow caregivers in providing exceptional care, from initial introduction to final send-off. In this role, you will interact directly with patients, families and visitors, offering the opportunity to enhance their experience and provide healthcare education as needed. Additionally, the Cleveland Clinic system provides nurses with many professional development resources, including furthering education and online/in-person courses to enhance your skills.
A caregiver in this position works nights from 7:00PM – 7:30AM.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Provide direct nursing care.
- Assess, plan, implement and evaluate care for a given patient population.
- Complete ongoing assessments, recognize changes in patient condition and respond appropriately.
- Develop and update goals and involve patients and families in developing plans of care.
- Serve as a patient advocate.
- Administer treatments and medication as needed.
- Participate in ongoing interdisciplinary evaluation of patient/family outcomes, contribute to the improvement of care and participate in the quality improvement process.
- Delegate tasks/assignments, serve as a resource person, pursue ongoing education and specialty certifications, maintain applicable certification/licensure and obtain any required certifications specific to the unit.
- Review and document progress and discharge goals with patients and families.
- Ensure JCAHO Core Measures related to nursing care are achieved, incorporate patient safety goals and complete all paper and electronic records.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Graduate from an accredited School of Professional Nursing
- Current state licensure as a Registered Nurse (RN)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification through the American Heart Association (AHA)
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and TNCC Certification and CVVHD training within one year of employment
- IABP course through Getinge within one year of employment
- Satisfactorily completion of Critical Care Course as administered by Staff Development (if new grad or new to critical care field)
- One year of current ICU or acute care RN experience in a hospital setting
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing (BSN)

Physical Requirements:
- Requires full range of body motion including handling and lifting patient, manual and finger dexterity, and eye-hand coordination.
- Requires standing and walking for extended periods of time.
- Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
- Requires working under stressful conditions and irregular hours.
- Exposure to communicable diseases and/or body fluids.
- Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
