The Executive Director of Data Engineering will lead the data engineering function within the healthcare organization, driving the design, development, and optimization of data pipelines, architectures, and analytics infrastructure. Reporting directly to the Chief Analytics Officer (CAO), this role is responsible for ensuring that data engineering aligns with the strategic objectives of the organization, supporting the delivery of advanced analytics, machine learning, and operational insights. The Executive Director will also be responsible for managing a team of data engineers and collaborating closely with data scientists, analysts, and other cross-functional teams to leverage healthcare data for improved patient outcomes, operational efficiencies, and strategic decision-making.

Responsibilities:

  • Leadership & Strategy:
    • Lead the overall strategy and execution of the data engineering function to support organizational goals in data analytics, AI, and machine learning.
    • Collaborate with the CAO to ensure data infrastructure aligns with the company’s healthcare analytics strategy and innovation goals.
    • Provide technical leadership in the design and development of scalable data platforms, ensuring they support real-time and batch processing.
  • Data Infrastructure & Architecture:
    • Design, implement, and maintain large-scale healthcare data pipelines and architectures to ensure efficient data collection, transformation, and storage.
    • Architect cloud-based and on-premise data solutions that support the organization’s analytics needs.
    • Ensure the data architecture is optimized for both structured and unstructured healthcare data, including EHR/EMR, claims data, genomics, and patient-reported data.
    • Utilize Big Data Technologies for storage and real-time analytics
  • Team Leadership & Development:
    • Build, mentor, and lead a team of data engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning.
    • Ensure the team follows best practices in coding, data management, and software development life cycles.
    • Set clear goals and performance metrics for the data engineering team, managing resources and budgets to meet departmental objectives.
  • Data Governance & Compliance:
    • Ensure the integrity, security, and availability of data across the organization, in compliance with healthcare regulations such as HIPAA, GDPR, and other applicable standards.
    • Implement robust data governance frameworks and policies to ensure data quality, accuracy, and lineage.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement:
    • Collaborate with the Chief Information Officer (CIO), data scientists, business analysts, and other key stakeholders to ensure the data platform meets the evolving needs of the organization.
    • Work closely with clinical and operational teams to understand data requirements and ensure data solutions deliver actionable insights.
    • Partner with vendors and external stakeholders for integration of third-party data solutions and tools.
  • Innovation & Continuous Improvement:
    • Stay updated on emerging technologies and industry trends, ensuring the organization remains at the forefront of healthcare data engineering innovations.
    • Drive continuous improvement initiatives to optimize the performance, cost-efficiency, and scalability of data systems.
    • Lead the development of data automation processes to streamline workflows and improve operational efficiencies.

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Information Systems, or related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 10 years of experience in data engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership or executive role within the healthcare industry.

Complexity of Work:

  • Strong financial/budgeting, project management and people management skills 
  • Excellent strategic thinking, problem-solving and decision-making abilities 
  • Expertise in process optimization, governance design and change management 
  • Proficiency in data analysis, visualization and insight translation 
  • Outstanding communication, leadership and stakeholder engagement talents 

Work Experience:

  • 10 years of progressive experience with technology in healthcare 
  • Deep understanding of healthcare technology landscape and digital transformation 
  • Experience in clinical informatics, health systems, or healthcare providers.

Familiarity with and able to architect and design scalable, security and efficient data systems utilizing the following:

  • Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards such as FHIR and HL7.
  • Experience with ETL tools (eg. ADF, DBT, Informatica)
  • Traditional databases as well as graph databases.
  • Experience with Cloud platforms such as Azure Data lake, Snowflake, Databricks.
  • In-depth understanding of healthcare data types (EHR, claims, genomics, etc.) and industry regulations (HIPAA, HITECH, etc.).
  • Data governance & security tools for example, Informatica Axon, Reltio, etc…
  • ML and AI infrastructure utilizing tools such as TensorFlor, PyTorch, MLflow, Kubeflor and Databricks.
  • CI/CD & DevOps Tools for Data:
  • Data Versioning and Lineage Tools such as DVC (Data Version Control)

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to perform work in a stationary position for extended periods.
  • Ability to travel throughout the hospital system.
  • Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment.
  • Ability to communicate and exchange accurate information.

Personal Protective Equipment:

  • Follow standard precautions using personal protective equipment as required.

Pay Range

Minimum hourly: $72.70

Maximum hourly: $143.58
